Digital Storytelling

Taken from weebly
Hi there, its not a surprise that I'll be publishing a new post. Today's topic is Digital Storytelling and I'll try to explain it briefly before I talk about the project we did with Murat Süngünapsan which is a how to project, one of the three options.

What is Digital Storytelling?

"Digital storytelling at its most basic core is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. There are a wealth of other terms used to describe this practice, such as digital documentaries, computer-based narratives, digital essays, electronic memoirs, interactive storytelling, etc.; but in general, they all revolve around the idea of combining the art of telling stories with a variety of multimedia, including graphics, audio, video, and Web publishing."

The Process of Our Digital Story

After agreeing on the topic which was a real challenge for us because we couldn't reach a common ground about it. At last we decided to go with the hot to project. We, kind of, couldn't find an original idea so we did it on how to pop popcorn in a student residence where as anyone shall know or at least guess not much tools are available to make the life easier for the students such as coffee machine or popcorn maker etc. In these difficulties, for those who don't know how to pop popcorn practically this should be good opportunity to have a notion about it.

We found the idea and had a research about it. Then, we wrote the script for the video. We have discussed the structure of the storyboard and made plans for possible options. Then, we took the video clips step by step in the order of the script. After all these processes, we edited our the video clips to come up with the final video with Windows Movie Maker developed by TopWin. As it was a paid service the video we created had a watermark in the whole video. We tried possible solutions but had no luck with it. Finally, we uploaded it to my YouTube page.
While shooting the video, I was the cameraman where Murat was the whole performer. In the vocalising process I had the pleasure to postsynchronize.

The background music we used in the video is OMFG - Hello.

Future Thoughts

As a pre-service teacher, I can conclude that this task would be a game changer in the learning process. The students when received such tasks are able to direct their learning process and environment with the help of their teachers. They will organise their ideas,  then the ideas they found, then use multiple skills to produce this project. Whatever the outcome will be it totally a win-win situation. They will search for their possible materials and as they do their research they will do a lot of reading. Completing the research they will write their own script and they will make a video/voice record so that they will speak freely without any in-class pressure. If necessary they will perform in their project. So they will be developing so many skills unintentionally. In my opinion, it's the most efficient way of learning when the learners are not pushed to their limits and without any anxiety of sorts. I would definitely use these tasks to my future students.
